Have a safe Memorial Day weekend!
Tuesday, 14 May 2013 02:20
Veteran's  Day is not just a holiday to go shopping and take advantage of Veteran's Day sales.  Remembering our veterans is a deadly serious matter.  In some ways, life is like a lottery and the veterans who serve and served in our military took a chance with their lives to protect us and our way of life.  Their future and survival, many times, a matter of mere luck.  Protecting our way of life?  With decades of domestic peace, 9/11 was a terrible wake up call for us in this country.   We have for several generations been protected by a strong military made up of our fellow citizens.  It is no accident that we live with the peace that we have become so accustomed.  On this veterans day, we need to take a moment to remember, thank and reflect on the sacrifices and risks that have been taken by our veterans.  Without them, our way of life could have been terribly different.    Col. Nicholas E. Phillips,  USAF (Ret.)

Watching the Lame Duck Congress sit in paralysis mode through the end of the year is disheartening to the American Spirit. As we end 2010, we, as families, end the year with the traditional holiday season where we reflect and review 2010 and consider and plan for 2011. During this final month of the year, we cling to family and wonder how we made it through the difficulties 2010 bought our way. The unemployment rate has just jumped up to 9.8%. Cutting unemployment benefits from millions of hardworking Americans during the holiday season is more than wrong, it is insulting to those Americans who have worked hard and paid taxes during their entire working lives and are having their last life line pulled from them at the wrong time. Not the way a grateful country should act.

Congress is locked in stand off arguments and is unable to act. The fight card pits cutting unemployment benefits against extending tax breaks for the top 2-3% of American wage earners. Wrong battle. Wrong time. While facing and dealing with the macro economic issues of getting our economy back on track, we still need to act with compassion to those Americans who need just one more month of unemployment to let them finish 2010 with even the most minimum sense of hope for 2011. One additional month of unemployment benefits is only a gesture, but it is one that heals the spirit and nurtures hope. It is a good investment in our country. Looking at the situation from a micro point of view - we need our ready and able unemployed workforce to be in top emotional condition to jump into battle again in January. Congress should act now and do what they can for most and not fritter these important ultra-sensitive days away as "lame ducks." As in war, one victim is a tragedy, millions of victims are just a statistic. There are millions of good Americans who will not have a very pleasant Christmas. Let us focus on the micro, the individuals who will power our economy again in the, hopefully, not too distant future. Let us give them "thanks and hope" for this holiday season.

Thanksgiving & TSA
Monday, 22 November 2010 02:20
Flying anywhere this Thanksgiving holiday? There is a lot of fuss concerning the more stringent screening TSA employees are required to perform that may cause a slight embarrassment to the few of us who may be identified for enhanced screening. Why the fuss? The enhanced screening is too intrusive.

Just a reminder, there really are people out there who want to kill us. We are at war and have been since 9/11/01. Weapon of choice - civil aircraft with suicide bombers and they keep trying. The TSA screeners are doing their job for you and me and we need to give them a break. Not one life is worth lessening our vigilance for this real threat. On Thanksgiving, TSA employees will be screening passengers trying to weed out potential terrorists. I am sure that they would rather be at home drifting off into a post turkey dinner haze watching football with the family. By the way, Thanksgiving is not a holiday for those trying to harm us.

The Miners Rescue touches Hearts

Rescue Complete for Chilean Miners - Lessons Learned

What did we learn by watching the rescue efforts to free the 33 miners trapped nearly a half mile below the surface in Chile? In August, after the mine collapse, the discovery that 33 miners were alive, well and trapped was bittersweet news. The engineering tasks to reach the miners and bring them safely to the surface was daunting to say the least. The conduct of the miners was textbook correct to insure their survival those many days. The lesson learned was from the engineers who slowly, carefully, patiently, professionally worked continuously on what seemed like an impossible project, to its completion. I suppose that when we are faced with major emergencies, calm cool heads who will work through the seemingly hopeless problem will provide the best chance to save lives. Emotional panic will only delay a good result. Bravo for the miners andtheir rescuers.
